GALLERY NEWS & UPDATES: JUNE • 2017

John R Stahl, who passed earlier this year, was a consummate artist, advocate and mentor. We are honored to have gotten to know John and his wife Janet shortly after opening Rowboat Gallery in Pacific City, and discovering that the Stahls lived on the edge of Netarts Bay, only a short drive north over Cape Lookout.

It continues to be a wonderful privilege sharing work from John’s eclectic and prolific career with an ever-expanding circle of enthusiastic collectors and admirers–work that ranges from large, bold abstract canvases, to intimate, atmospheric watercolors; from solid, sensuous, hand-shaped Wilson River stones, to intriguingly collaged ephemera and mono prints.

Through the month of September, Rowboat Gallery will be hosting a memorial exhibit of representative work from John’s career, curated with Janet’s invaluable assistance. The opening reception will be on Saturday, September 9th, from 3 to 6:00, and will feature contributions and tributes from a number of other artists who have worked with, and been influenced by John and his art. This influence came not only directly through his role as a long-time teacher and mentor (beginning at Portland’s Museum Art School in 1973), but also as an active collaborator in a vibrant community of committed professional Northwest artists who shared John’s deep connection with Oregon’s natural environment and the importance of communicating shared values through a cohesive, organic esthetic vocabulary.

Angelita Surmon

New Landscapes

My Image

We have had a wonderful response to the the work of Portland artists Angelita Surmon, who we began representing several months ago.

She has brought us several new acrylic paintings on canvas, including
Weaving Nets (above, 30 x 40 inches). We are also showing two of her uniquely beautiful kiln-formed glass panels.

More information about Angelita and her work is available at her website.

Jonathan Luczycki

Painting En Plein Air

My Image

Painting in oils, Portland artist Jonathan Luczycki works on location to capture the immediacy of natural light in the atmosphere and upon the landscape.
Luczycki’s art combines a remarkable dedication to traditional oil techniques, with a contemporary, intuitive appreciation of Oregon’s coastal beauty.
We are currently showing two of his larger canvases featuring views of Cape Kiwanda and Haystack Rock, as well as a number of other smaller panels painted during numerous trips to the South Tillamook County area.
